Scout Chief Marketplace
The Great Salt Lake Council, one of the largest Scout councils in the nation, has organized a coalition of 33 Scout councils representing more than half a million boys to ask the National Executive Board of the Boy Scouts of America to delay the vote on a controversial proposal to eliminate its national policy prohibiting homosexuals from joining or leading Scout troops.

In a message posted on its website Monday, the council expressed its “concern about the pace at which such actions are being taken.”

“Time must be allowed for accurate polling data to be collected from stakeholders at all levels and all areas in an unbiased way,” the message read. “The voices of existing chartered partners and financial contributors must be heard alongside those of our volunteer leaders and the parents who entrust their children to us.”

Council spokesman Kay Godfrey didn’t identify the other councils in the coalition because he did not have permission from them to do so. But reports circulated throughout the weekend that heavy pressure was being exerted on the national board to delay the vote, scheduled to be taken Wednesday during meetings at national Scout headquarters in Irving, Texas, this week.

For many, the very future of Scouting is at stake.

The National Executive Board, rarely mentioned through its years of volunteer service to Scouting, has been awash in controversy ever since it was announced early last week that board members would be voting on the proposed change. Some, like the editorial board of the Washington Post, are urging the national BSA board to make the change. But others are predicting a “mass exodus” of traditional support for the Boy Scouts — particularly from religious groups that have long formed the foundational underpinning for the entire Scouting structure — should the proposed policy change be adopted.

BSA spokesman Deron Smith said the organization wouldn’t take an official position on the proposal. But he did outline the process through which such changes are made in Scouting national policy.

The National Executive Board, he said, consists of the national president, regional presidents and between 60 and 70 regularly elected board members. Although Smith declined to provide the names of all of the current board members (“We do not share specific information regarding members of the National Executive Board,” he said), he did confirm that President Thomas S. Monson of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints “is a long-standing and valued member of the National Executive Board.”

The LDS Church has sponsored Scouting as an officially endorsed activity for its young men since 1913. It was the first religious group to make Scouting part of its religious ministry, and it remains the largest single sponsor of Scouting in the United States, with more than one-third of all Scout troops in the U.S. under LDS sponsorship.

Free Republic, a conservative Internet forum, has obtained and published a list of the current BSA National Executive Board members. The list includes David L. Beck, general president of the LDS Church’s Young Men organization, as the other Utahn currently serving on the board. Also serving are such prominent business leaders as AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson, Ernst & Young CEO James Turley and ExxonMobil CEO Rex W. Tillerson. Mitt Romney and former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates are among notable former board members.

BSA bylaws require the board to hold an annual meeting — this year’s annual meeting is scheduled for May 22-24 in Grapevine, Texas. The board usually meets at least one other time during the year to consider important matters of business. It is one of these additional meetings that is under way in Irving, where the proposed policy change would be considered by the full board — assuming the vote is not postponed until May’s annual meeting.

I was tired of ripping paper out of my notebook to make a funnel when I was deployed. The paper would get wet and the protein powder would get clumped up before it made it into my water bottle. So I decided to recycle my old water bottle and make a funnel. This funnel is great because I can screw it on to new water bottles with out making a huge mess and wasting other resources. I’ve had this funnel for a while and I haven’t had to make a new one.

I used the following materials because it’s all I had but you can get more creative with making your funnel. Just remember to practice safety when using knives, scissors or other sharp objects.

Fixed Blade boot knife by smith and wesson (pocket knife will do just fine)

Packaging tape (Super Glue will work better than tape)

An empty used water bottle

Used cap from a previously used water bottle.

Step 1
Gather your materials, safely prick wholes into the tops of your two extra bottle caps. I perforrated little holes in a circular shape around the cap. I was able to pull the plastic tab right out of the hole with out cutting my fingers. Use caution while working with sharp objects. See the photo below:

How to make a bottle funnel

How to make a bottle funnel

Step 2:
Attache the two lids together using tape or what ever else you can use. Be sure to put the part of the lids that would be tops together. That way you can screw one lid to the funnel part of the water bottle and the other lid to the water bottle you are going to pour your mix into. tape the lids opposite of each other like this:

Open end of lid ——–> ] [ <-----------Open end of lid

Caps for Water Bottle Funnel

Step 3
Cut the old water bottle in half (sorry I don’t have a pic of that) Next, screw a side of the taped lids onto the cut in half water bottle and POOF you have a water bottle funnel that can be screwed onto the tops of water bottles. Use it at your camp outs for hot chocolate or other cooking things. It can be useful if you make it tough. Like I said my funnel has lasted a while.

How to make a water bottle funnel

The Boy Scouts of America is a youth organization that provides an avenue for boys to develop character, leadership skills and that promotes citizenship, personal health and fitness. Being a Boy Scout may not the most popular thing for many boys, but the benefits to boys who join and participate in scouting activities can be huge.

When a boy joins a Boy Scout troop, he starts learning about Scouting. He learns about the various ranks he can achieve and how he can move up in rank. He also learns about merit badges. As a boy earns merit badges, participates in Scouting activities and achieves higher ranks, he also develops and learns skills he can use throughout his lifetime.

Scouting includes activities like camping. To prepare for camp-outs, boys learn basic skills like tying different kinds of knots. Knowing which knots to use in which situations can help in the field as he sets up a tent, as he lashes poles together or dresses a wound with a bandage.

While camping, Scouts learn basic survival skills like finding shelter, making a fire without matches and finding water and making it safe to drink. Scouts can learn how to identify various plants that are safe to eat and how to trap game. They can also have a lot of fun exploring nature and learning to find their way around with a map and GPS device.

Scouting also brings kids and families together. Fathers can participate in activities and can help lead a troop. Some dads with special skills can teach the Scouts those skills. When I was a Scout in Alaska, we learned arctic survival skills from cold weather experts. We even built a winter shelter and slept in it at 44 degrees below zero.

The more modern day Scouts now also learn about graphic design, computer skills and building websites. Just as Scouts did 100 years ago, modern-day Scouts also learn the value of serving others by doing service projects.

Take a look at some names from history who achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, Scouting’s highest rank. Former United States president Gerald Ford was an Eagle Scout. Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon is an Eagle Scout. Stephen Spielberg, J. Willard Marriott and Bill Gates all earned the rank of Eagle Scout. Those are some pretty big names and my guess is that some of what they learned as Scouts were used to help them achieve what they did.

Dear Mum,

Our Scoutmaster told us to write to our parents in case you saw the flood on
TV and got worried. We are okay. Only one of our tents and 2 sleeping bags
got washed away. Luckily, none of us got drowned because we were all up on
the mountain looking for Adam when it happened.

Oh yes, please call Adam’s mother and tell her he is okay. He can’t write
because of the cast. I got to ride in one of the search and rescue Jeeps. It
was great. We never would have found Adam in the dark if it hadn’t been for
the lightning.

Scoutmaster Ted got mad at Adam for going on a hike alone without telling
anyone. Adam said he did tell him, but it was during the fire so he probably
didn’t hear him. Did you know that if you put gas on a fire, the gas will
blow up?

The wet wood didn’t burn, but one of the tents did and also some of our
clothes.

Matthew is going to look weird until his hair grows back.

We will be home on Saturday if Scoutmaster Ted gets the bus fixed. It wasn’t
his fault about the crash. The brakes worked okay when we left. Scoutmaster
Ted said that with a bus that old, you have to expect something to break
down; that’s probably why he can’t get insurance.

We think it’s a super bus. He doesn’t care if we get it dirty, and if it’s
hot, sometimes he lets us ride on the bumpers. It gets pretty hot with 45
people in a bus made for 24. He let us take turns riding in the trailer
until the policeman stopped and talked to us.

Scoutmaster Ted is a neat guy. Don’t worry, he is a good driver. In fact, he
is teaching Horace how to drive on the mountain roads where there aren’t any
cops. All we ever see up there are huge logging trucks.

This morning all of the guys were diving off the rocks and swimming out to
the rapids. Scoutmaster Ted wouldn’t let me because I can’t swim, and Adam
was afraid he would sink because of his cast (it’s concrete because we
didn’t have any plaster), so he let us take the canoe out. It was great. You
can still see some of the trees under the water from the flood.

Scoutmaster Ted isn’t crabby like some scoutmasters. He didn’t even get mad
about the life jackets. He has to spend a lot of time working on the bus so
we are trying not to cause him any trouble.

Guess what? We have all passed our first aid merit badges. When Andrew dived
into the lake and cut his arm, we all got to see how a tourniquet works.

Steve and I threw up, but Scoutmaster Ted said it was probably just food
poisoning from the left-over chicken. He said they got sick that way with
food they ate in prison. I’m so glad he got out and became our scoutmaster.
He said he sure figured out how to get things done better while he was doing
his time. By the way, what is a pedal-file?

I have to go now. We are going to town to post our letters and buy some more
beer and ammo. Don’t worry about anything. We are fine and tonight it’s my
turn to sleep in the Scoutmaster’s tent.

If you are looking to receive one of the eagle scout scholarships offered by the National Eagle Scout Association (NESA) then we have provided information on the process. Understand that the scholarships are provided annually based on the available funds. There are also a number of constraints attached to this scholarship that we will cover. This article will focus on the process associated with eagle scout scholarships. Scholarship Stipulations There are four stipulations that you must agree to in order to receive educational funding from NESA. These are as follows:

Award money is paid directly to college/university. This will be done after NESA has received a completed form that you must fill out beforehand.

Tuition, board, room and books are covered. These are the educational expenses that will be paid for by NESA as long as you are a full-time student for the duration of the scholarship.

Award money is paid based on the institution’s guidelines.

Award money is strictly for all accredited four-year college/university institutions that offer at least a bachelor’s degree.

Scholarship Requirements In order to be considered for any of the award money an applicant must be able to confirm the following qualifications:

An Eagle Scout Rank. This may also be an application just as long as it can be verified at the national office.

Applications must be postmarked after November 1. Eligibility continues up to midnight February 28. By the March 5th deadline all applications must be received by the Eagle Scout Service.

Must be entering college and a high school graduating senior the year the scholarship is applied for. The only exception are scouts who have their Eagle Scout boards of review between the first of March and July 31st of their high school graduating year. They are eligible to enter a scholarship application the following year.

Produce a high school transcript showing grades for at least six semesters only. (i.e. Need not be “official.”)

ACT score must be at least a 26 and a SAT score of 1090 or higher. When submitted the scores must be attached to the official test sheet. They may also be provided on the “Official” high school transcript provided in point (4).

Demonstrated a consistent scouting leadership ability and be able to provide a record of being involved in other activities besides Scouting.

Produce a clearly written statement demonstrating why the applicant feels they need financial assistance. This must be signed by a parent of the applicant and the applicant.

An endorsement from a scout leader or volunteer who has a personal relationship with the applicant.

In Summary This article has attempted to give out as much information as possible about receiving award money from (NESA). Of course with anything of this nature that might be dependent on timely information you should contact NESA and get the most up-to-date information. By utilizing the information given in this article you can raise the possibility of receiving eagle scout scholarships and saving time.
